What is Outback Steakhouse?

Outback Steakhouse is an Australian-themed American casual dining restaurant chain that is famous for its hearty and flavorful dishes.

Outback Steakhouse is particularly renowned for its juicy steaks, Alice Springs Chicken, signature Bloomin' Onion appetizer, and, of course, its mouthwatering bread.

Labelled ingredients on a table.

Ingredients

You only need simple pantry ingredients for this recipe!

  • Warm water: Warm water at approximately 100°F/38°C is crucial for activating the yeast, ensuring proper fermentation and rise of the dough.
  • Brown sugar: Brown sugar adds a subtle caramel-like sweetness to the bread, enhancing its flavor and contributing to a soft texture.
  • Honey: Honey not only adds natural sweetness but also imparts a unique depth of flavor to the bread, creating a delightful taste profile.
  • Molasses: Molasses brings a rich and robust flavor to the bread, adding a hint of bitterness and enhancing its overall complexity.
  • Instant dry yeast: Instant dry yeast provides a quick and convenient way to leaven the bread, helping it rise and develop a light, airy texture.
  • All-purpose flour: All-purpose flour is versatile and works well for bread baking. It provides the structure and gluten development needed for a well-rounded bread.
  • Whole wheat flour: Adding whole wheat flour to the recipe adds nutritional value and a slightly nutty flavor, creating a heartier and denser bread.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder gives a subtle hint of chocolate flavor to the bread, adding depth and complexity to its taste.
  • Salt: Salt enhances the overall flavor of the bread, balancing the sweetness and adding depth. It also helps to control yeast activity and strengthen the dough.
  • Vegetable oil: Vegetable oil adds moisture to the bread, resulting in a tender crumb and prolonging its freshness. It also contributes to a softer texture and enhances the overall richness.

Recipe Tips

  1. Make sure the water is warm, around 100°F/38°C, when activating the yeast. This temperature provides an ideal environment for the yeast to activate and helps the dough rise properly. If the water is too hot, it can kill the yeast, and if it's too cold, the yeast won't activate properly.
  2. Give the dough enough time to rise. The first rise is essential for the yeast to do its job and develop the desired texture and flavor. Ensure that the dough has doubled in size before proceeding with shaping and baking. Similarly, the second rise after shaping the dough into rolls or a loaf allows for additional proofing and a lighter final result. Patience is key to achieving a fluffy and well-risen bread.
