    Ingredients

    • Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets - You can find these in the frozen section of your grocery store, near the frozen pie crusts. Be sure to thaw the pastry sheets before using but keep them cold.
    • Nutella - This glorious spread is made from hazelnuts and chocolate and can be found in the peanut butter aisle of your grocery store. Other brands of chocolate hazelnut spread can also be used.
    • Egg -This will be used to brush on the pastry before baking to give it a golden brown color when baked. Alternatively, brush with milk or leave them without any glaze.

Prepare for baking: Preheat the oven to 400F/200C. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment paper. Set aside.

    Cutting out the puff pastry.

Roll out the pastry dough: Unfold the thawed but cold puff pastry sheets onto baking parchment paper with the long side facing you. Roll it out slightly to thin out the pastry thickness. Cut the pastry sheets into 2-inch wide strips, then cut all strips in half.

Rolling up the chocolate filled pastry.

Add Nutella: Spread the Nutella over the strips, leaving space at each edge without any. Roll the pastry up from the small edge to create little bites.

Brushing the rolled pastries with egg.

Brush and bake: Place each rolled pastry, seam side down, onto the baking sheet at least 2 inches apart. Brush the rolls with the beaten egg. Bake for 25 minutes or until risen and golden.

    Cook's Tips

When working with pastry dough, it's important that the dough stays chilled after thawing. This will help prevent it from getting sticky and difficult to work with.

I like to use a piping bag or small spoon to add the Nutella onto the pastry strips. This helps prevent making a mess and ensures that each strip is evenly coated with chocolatey goodness!

The pastry dough will spread while baking so you may need to use multiple baking sheets if necessary.

If you want to get really fancy, try drizzling melted chocolate over the cooled pastry bites.

Try sprinkling the cooled pastries with a light dusting of powdered confectioner's sugar.

These Nutella pastry bites are best eaten on the same day they are made though they can be stored.

    Variations

Try using a different chocolate hazelnut spread in place of the Nutella. Like Trader Joe's Chocolate Almond Spread.

Add a sprinkle of chopped hazelnuts, mini chocolate chips, or shredded coconut to the pastry before rolling it up.

Instead of Nutella, you can sprinkle them with chocolate chips or spread them with melted chocolate.

For a non-chocolate version, try using jam or nut butter instead of the Nutella.

Try using store-bought croissant (crescent) dough for a shortcut version of this recipe.

If you want to get really fancy, try drizzling melted chocolate over the cooled pastry bites.

    Storage & Freezing

Storage: Leftover pastry bites can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Freezing: These bites can also be frozen for up to two months. Place them in a freezer-safe container, separating the layers with parchment paper. When ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator then bring to room temperature before serving.

Reheating: For best results, reheat pastry bites in a 350F oven until warmed through.

    FAQs

What can I use if I can't find puff pastry?

If you can't find puff pastry, you could try using croissant dough or even crescent roll dough. The cooking times and shapes may vary.

Are these eaten hot or cold?

These are best served warm but can be eaten cold as well.

    What does Nutella taste like?

Nutella has a sweet and chocolatey taste with a hazelnut flavor. It's creamy and spreadable making it a great option for quick and easy desserts.
