Ingredients

You only need simple pantry ingredients for this recipe!

Ingredients on a table.
  • Chicken Wings - if using frozen, thaw them out safely first.
  • Parmesan - you'll need grated parmesan cheese.
  • Garlic - This recipe calls for garlic paste. You can buy it, or make your own by crushing 3 cloves of garlic and then scraping it on a cutting board with a knife to puree it further.
  • Garlic Powder - add even more garlic flavor with powdered garlic. If you don't want it as garlicky, use onion powder.
  • Butter and Oil - use salted or unsalted butter and your usual cooking oil (canola, olive etc...)
  • Salt and Pepper - To season the garlic parmesan chicken wings.

See the recipe card for quantities and method.

How to cut chicken wings

To cut full chicken wings, use a sharp knife to separate the wing at its joints and cut each wing into two pieces (flat and drumette).

If the wing has a tip, cut it off and discard it.

Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions, then scroll down for the full ingredients list and method.

Coating chicken wings in seasonings.

Place the chicken wings into a deep bowl, and add the olive oil, garlic paste, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Save the parmesan and butter for later in the recipe.

Thoroughly mix the wings so that each part is coated. If you wish, you can cover the bowl with cling film and leave it for 30-60 minutes to marinade.

Chicken wings on a baking sheet being oven baked.

To cook in the oven:

Preheat the oven to 390°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or foil.

Transfer the chicken wings to the lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, then turn each one over with tongs and bake for a further 5 minutes or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F).

To cook in the air fryer:

If you are baking the wings in an air fryer, you will need to preheat it for 5 minutes to 390F. Then lay the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer (you may need to cook in batches so as not to overcrowd the basket). Bake at 400°F/200°C for 15 minutes.

Use tongs to turn each wing over and bake for another 7 minutes, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F).

To finish: Put the hot cooked wings into a bowl, pour over the melted butter, and add the grated parmesan. Toss to coat each piece with Parmesan and butter. Serve the wings right away.

Scroll down for the full ingredients list and method.

Variations

  • Spicy - add chili pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne to the oil marinade.
  • Deluxe - Try a dash of truffle oil for a sophisticated flavor.
  • Make them a Wingstop Copycat: skip the oil in the marinade and stir the seasonings into a small dish of flour instead. Toss the wings in it, then deep fry!

Wings are best served with dipping sauces, amiright? Check out these ones to make your garlic parm wings even better.

Top tip

Don't overcook your wings! You need to ensure that they are safely cooked through (the internal temperature should read 165°F with a meat thermometer) but don't overcook any small ones or they could dry out. You can remove the smaller ones from the oven or air fryer early with tongs, once they are cooked through.

Food Safety Tips

  • Before cooking, wash your hands and countertops.
  • Do not use the same utensils on cooked food that has touched raw meat.
  • Always wash your hands after touching raw meat.
  • Never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Keep those pot/pan handles turned in away from the front of the stove.
  • When cooking at high temperatures, use oils with a high smoking point, to avoid harmful compounds.
  • Ensure you have good ventilation when cooking on gas.
  • Put foods in the fridge or freezer within 2 hours of cooking. Reduce this to within 1 hour if it is 90 degrees or hotter outside.
  • Safely thaw food in the fridge, under cold running water, or in the microwave.
  • To ensure food is cooked through, it's best to use a food thermometer. Be aware that you can’t always tell by looking.

Cook to safe temperatures:

  • Beef, Pork, Lamb: 145 °F
  • Fish: 145 °F
  • Ground Beef, Ground Pork, Ground Lamb: 160 °F
  • Turkey, Chicken, Duck: 165 °F
